July 22-24-Short Stay in the Lincoln, NE area.

We camped at a State Recreation Area for our short stay in the Lincoln Area.  A parking permit is required for all vehicles entering a State Park or Recreation Area in addition to the camping fees.  We thought we might end up staying at more than one State Park while in Nebraska so we opted to purchase an out of state yearly parking permit for $45.  (It would have cost $8 per day if we chose to pay on a daily basis.)

On our one trip into the capitol we took a tour of the Capitol Building.  Construction took 10 years.  Also known as the “Tower on the Plains,” as it can be seen as far away as 20 miles.

There are symbolisms representing traditions of the past, present and future found everywhere in the entire building.

The Great Hall introduces the Nebraska Hall of Fame-
a collection of bronze busts of noteworthy Nebraskans.

Although I found the tour interesting the best part of the visit to the capitol building was going to the 14th floor where we had great views of the downtown. Our other excursion in the city was to the Museum of American Speed.  I’m not really into racing cars so I pleasantly surprised how interesting I found the museum.  I thought we would breeze through it perhaps spending an hour or so but we ended up going on a two hour guided tour followed by another two hours of a self-guided tour.

Warning-this post is photo intensive.  I managed to wheedle down the amount of pictures that Monte and I took (400 combined) to 60 for the post.

The museum, established in 1992 by Speedway Motors found “Speedy” Bill Smith and his wife Joyce, contains a collection of automobile memorabilia amassed over 60 years.
