Humbug
Mountain State Park, OR
Saturday-We
had another large turnout for our Dragonfly program. There have been a few families staying at the
park for a couple of weeks because the area they live in Oregon has had fires
with such severe smoke that they had to leave home.
As
a consequence we have had some of the same kids attend our program everyday and
have gotten to know them.
It
was a cold and damp so we were couch potatoes the rest of the day. After dinner we took a walk down to the lower
loop. When we were invited to sit down
to share the campfire at the host site of Mahlon and Deralynn we only planned on
staying for a few minutes, but ended up enjoying their company for over two
hours.
Sunday-Our
program today was on Birds of the Park.
We got to the site earlier than usual because we had more of a setup
than we normally have. We hung a large
banner that shows the wing span of several birds.
Monte
hung pictures of birds in the bushes around the site for the portion of the
program when the kids would use the binoculars to bird watch. We also handed out bird identification
booklets.
I
wasn’t expecting a large turnout because traditionally on Sunday campers are
packing up getting ready to leave or have already left. But this morning we had 32 attendees and only
5 binoculars.
After
Monte gave a presentation on the birds of the park, he instructed the kids on
the proper handling of binoculars. Then
we divided the kids and their parents into groups and distributed the binoculars. Everyone had fun spotting the “birds” Monte
had placed around the site. We finished
off the program by making hummingbird feeders.
I
spent a couple of hours outside working on my laptop while enjoying the nice
weather.
Annie
being a “chair” potato. (Something she
does quite often)
