Travel
from Kanarraville, UT
To
Page, AZ
Our
destination today was Lake Powell outside of Page, AZ.
Red Ledge RV Park, UT
We have been keeping up with the news
regarding the Government shutdown.
We
knew we were taking a leap of faith that it was not going to occur as we made
our way to the Glen Canyon Recreation Area.
Our backup plan was an overnight stay at Walmart in Page.
Shortly
after crossing into Arizona we made a stop at Pipe Springs National Monument.
Mormon pioneers established a cattle ranch at
the springs.
A fort was built after
Apache, Navajo and Paiute tribes raided the ranch.
Polygamist wives sought refuse at the
fort.
Touchable exhibits
This stove was considered the latest and greatest and would have cost approximately two months pay.
The Mormons ran thousands of miles of telegraph wires.
Wooden trough running through the basement of the fort.
Cheese making vat.
Cooling racks
Monte couldn't resist petting the horses.
Back
on the road again our route took us back into Utah.
When we entered the town of Kanab, Monte
found a place to pull over while I went into the Kane County Office of Tourism
to pick up brochures.
On
the lonely strip between Kanab and Page we passed a Utah police car parked on
the side of the road. As soon as I
passed the car, he turned on his lights and flashers and motioned for me to
pull over. There was very little
shoulder room so I continued for a mile or so until I came to a place I could
safely pull over into.
It
seems I was following Monte too closely.
The patrolman was very nice letting me off with a warning.
Our
next stop came just outside of Page at the BLM Visitor Center. We inquired if there were any BLM lands to
boondock in if the Government campgrounds were shut down. NOPE-so it was starting to look like a
Walmart night.
When
we entered Page, we found the Walmart and set up quickly. I wanted to tour the Glen Canyon Dam. It was already 4:15 and I suspected the dam
might close by 5PM.
I
ran into Walmart to buy a couple of Subway sandwiches to take with us. When we arrived at the Carl Haden Visitor
Center we learned that we were too late to take a tour so we took a few
pictures and left.
We
drove to the nearby marina at Lake Powell
and found a nice place to eat our
sandwiches.
When
we inquired at the Wahweap Campground about availability we were told we could
have a site for the evening but would have leave tomorrow if the Government
shuts down. BUT
even if we could have gotten a spot for a few days we wouldn’t have stayed
there because the sites were very expensive at $48/night for a full
hook-up. They do not accept the Senior
Pass for discounted camping. No Thanks.
So
our plans are totally up in the air at this point as we will be totally at the
mercy of the GOVERNMENT!
