October 15-18

After crossing into Texas we drove to AOK Camper Park in Amarillo.

It was cold and rainy most of our stay but we did venture out a couple of times.
One outing was to the Cadillac Ranch RV Park that has three cars with dummy drivers that appeared to be Elvis, Willie Nelson and John Wayne.

We also visited the Jack Sisemore Traveland RV Museum, located in a building at the rear of a RV dealership.
The museum is free to the public.
According to the brochure the Sisemores began restoring and collecting unusual vintage RVs over 25 years ago.
The museum collection includes RVs dating back to the 30s.

Dinner at the Big Texan Steak Ranch was interesting.
The restaurant is best known for its 72 ounce steak, nicknamed “The Texas King.”  The steak is free to anyone who, in one hour or less, can eat the entire meal, consisting of the steak, a bread roll with butter, a baked potato, shrimp cocktail, and a salad.  Failure to eat the meal in the allotted time results in $72 bill.

The steak is cooked to the participant’s preference, and the challenge takes place at a table for six on a raised platform in the middle of the dining room.
Unfortunately, no one took up the challenge while we were dining.
I couldn’t finish all of the 8 ounce steak I ordered so I can’t imagine anyone eating a 72 ounce steak.

While in the Amarillo area we also visited the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.
13,000 years ago this site was already known by mammoth hunters as a place to get the best stone for their tools.
