Chucalissa Museum

Memphis, TN

The Chucalissa Museum showcases the Mississippian culture of the Chucalissa which means “abandoned house” in Choctaw.

In 1994, the Chucalissa was designated a National Historic Landmark for its importance as one of the best preserved and major prehistoric settlement sites in the region.

Chucalissa is a mound plaza complex that was occupied and abandoned and reoccupied several times throughout its history.

It is known for the well preserved architectural, floral, faunal and human remains excavated there.

CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) workers discovered Native American artifacts on the site in 1938.
The museum contains an extensive collection of artifacts recovered during a 40-year period of excavations.

The site features a Mississippian mound complex, nature trail and arboretum, hands-on archaeology lab and exhibits that explore the history and life of Native Americans of the historic southeastern United States.
