Rainy day drive around Big Lagoon State Park
& Perdido Key, Pensacola, FL
It rained all night long. In the morning, Monte had to get on a ladder
and brush the water off of our slide toppers.
Our campsite
Part of the loop around the campground
A typical site -there are only a few like our site with a concrete slab.
In the afternoon we took a ride down to the
day use area of Big Lagoon State Park.
There are several pavilions
We walked through one of the pavilions where caterers were setting up for a wedding reception.
The Amphitheater
Next we headed over the bridge to Perdido
Key
and entered the Florida side of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Monte had a bag of cookies in his lap.
When I reached over to get one all I ended up with was an EMPTY BAG!
One of my Mom's knick names for Monte is the Cookie Monster
This part of the shore is called Rosamond
Johnson Beach named in honor of an Army private who served in the Korean
War. Private Johnson, who joined the
military at age 15, carried two wounded soldiers to safety and was killed when
he returned to try to assist a third wounded soldier.
A seashell collectors dream
We took the road to the turnaround at the end.
The sun was trying to poke through.
We watched the great blue heron sitting perfectly still. If we hadn't seen it move slightly I would have thought it was a statue.
Finally the sun came out and with it the HEAT
After exiting the Gulf Shores National Seashore, we drove along Perdido Key for a few miles and ended up crossing into Alabama. We made a U-turn at that point.
