When
Monte went to check the mouse traps this morning he found two more mice had
tripped the trap. One in the basement
and one near the back tire of the rig.
He
told me he thought we were going to need more traps so after our morning
program we took a ride to the Ace Hardware store in town where we bought more
traps and a couple boxes of moth balls.
While
we were in town we decided to visit Port Orford Heads State Park and Lifeboat
Station.
The museum offers personalized dogs tags made with the original machine used back in the 1940s.
The
U.S. Coast Guard built a lifeboat station at Port Orford Heads because of the
frequent shipwrecks along the coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The observation tower and boathouse is long
gone but the former Crew Quarters building is now a museum.
I practiced sending a SOS code.
We began our visit by touring the museum and interpretive center.
I'm old enough to remember having this radiator type of heat in our house.
A
500 step stairway connected the Crew Quarters with a boathouse in Nellies Cove
that had sheltered two 36-foot motor lifeboats.
The pilings are still visible from the boathouse that burned down in the
late 1970s.
There
are several hiking trails available at the park.
We started off on the Nellies Cove Trail
where we were treated to spectacular views.
Rather
than take the same trail back we took the Headland Trail that dead ends at a scenic
viewpoint where we spotted a group of seals sunning themselves on the rocks
below.
