Humbug
Mountain State Park, OR
&
Walmart, Medford, OR
Saturday-What
a disaster our program was today. The
campground wasn’t as full as we expected it to be on a holiday weekend due to
the rain. We had one grandmother show up
with her four grandchildren. Our
programs are geared toward children 6-12 years-old. One of the children attending was 7 years-old
and the other three were under 5. Within
a couple of minutes, the 7 year-old asked how long she HAD to stay. We cut the program short after only 10
minutes.
We
went into town for the last time to do wash and go to the library.
Sunday-I
had mixed feelings as we presented our very last program. After being in one place for two months I am
certainly ready to move on but doing the JR Ranger programs had become part of
our regular routine and I really enjoyed working with the kids.
We
stopped to say goodbye to Norm and Cheryl (who are returning to Cape Blanco for
another month as Lighthouse hosts) and to Mahlon and Deralyn who were headed
home to Paradise, CA.
The
rest of the day was spent in doing some pre-departure chores. Normally, we only stay at the same site for a
few days and can be ready to leave in an hour but the chores required when we
stay at a place as long as we have been at Humbug takes much longer.
Sarah,
one of the regular rangers and Greg, the Interpretive Ranger, came to say
goodbye. He wrote a very impressive
reference letter for us that we could submit with an application if we decide
to apply for interpretive hosting.
We
have had a great experience both as Lighthouse hosts and JR Ranger hosts but it
is time to get back On The Road.
Monday-I
hadn’t bothered to set the alarm because we have been naturally waking up
between 7 and 7:30 so I was surprised to see that it was already after 8 when I
got out of bed.
We
began getting ready-taking extra time to make sure we didn’t forget to secure
anything and that everything was stowed.
Okay-I know what all that packing means and I don't like it one bit!
Monte checking the tire pressure and lug nuts.
Stowing the bikes.
I
had wanted to leave by 10AM. We didn’t
end up pulling out of the campground until 11:45-close enough.
Our
route took us down 101.
We traveled through Gold Beach
and then stopped to have lunch and enjoy the coast for the last time.
It was very foggy in Brookings.
But the weather cleared up as we crossed the border into California
After
rounding the bend just outside of Crescent City we started north again towards
Medford.
We
had big shopping to do at Walmart in Medford and planned to spend the night in
the parking lot.
Something didn’t seem
right when we arrived. The parking lot
was almost empty. It turned out that the
Walmart was closed for renovations. We
could have stayed overnight but we still needed to do shopping so we continued
on 9 miles down the road to the next Walmart.
Two
carts and almost $300 later we returned to the rig to stow the goods.
We had planned on having a nice dinner out
but the only place to eat nearby was Carl’s JR. so that is where we went.
